How can I know if my westie is developing a serious skin condition?
I have read lots of articles about westies having problems with their skin, my 5 year old westy scartches her snout a lot, and she also has some grey dry spots on her belly. In my town there%26#039;s no veterinary dermatologist. I have taken her to several vets but they only recommend vitacilina ointment which isnt helping.|||if your dog has a skin problem the first sign is itching all the time if your dog doesn%26#039;t have fleas then the vet will explain to you most likely it has allergies also you can tell if bald spots are there due to scratching|||My sister has a westie. They are prone to skin problems but i dont think that this should make you paranoid. Have you ckecked her for fleas?? A really good prevention for ticks and fleas is DAWN it works really well but doesnt dry out the skin which is important for westies.
Im not an expert but i dont think that she would be scratching just her nose if it was skin problems as they tend to spread, maybe she has hayfever?? It sounds crazy but my old labrodor during spring and summer would get the worst hayfever, he would constantly sneeze and scratch his snout and rub the sides of his nose on the floor.
Sorry i cant be of more help. There are some vets forums on the internet, i know some people who have joined. You type in your question and a qualified vet will answer. Its a really good thing to have for problems like this, especially if you live far away from a vet. I think they%26#039;ll be of more use than me!
I hope she gets better soon x|||www.westiefoundation.org/westiehealth/we鈥?br>
above is a .pdf booklet which relates common health issues with westies... maybe there is something in this booklet.
if your dog%26#039;s food contains corn, wheat or wheat gluten, change its diet. these ingredients commonly cause allergies. so do fleas...
take care!
