What natural items can I give my dog to help with dry skin?

My Pit Bull has dry skin and is itching all the time. He does not have fleas but he does have dandruff... What can I feed him that will help with the dry skin. I have special shampoo for dry skin but I do not know how well it works considering that everytime he gets a bath it drys out his skin even more. Any vitamins or foods you guys could recommend would be great!

Thanks.|||What food is your dog eating? I%26#039;d first try upgrading to a super-premium dog food. You cannot usually find these at places like Petsmart or Petco. You have to go to a small %26quot;mom%26#039;n%26#039;pop%26quot; type pet store. Some good brands include: Innova, California Natural, Wellness, Solid Gold, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover%26#039;s Soul, Canidae, Blue Buffalo, and Nutro Ultra (among others) Here%26#039;s a great website that teaches you the basics of what to look for when reading an ingredient label on dog food: http://www.dogfoodproject.com/

Make sure you read the articles linked on the left side including Label Information 101, Identifying Better Products, Ingredients to Avoid, and The Yuck Factor. This will teach you how to read a dog food label and pick the best food for your dog and his coat.

If the change in food quality doesn%26#039;t help (but it should!), you can try supplementing with fish body oils. You can get the pills at any health food or vitamin shop. I gave my 70 lb dog 1000mg of fish oil a day.

I%26#039;d also recommend working with your vet to treat the skin issues as there may be some other underlying condition, such as contact dermatits. Good luck!|||I%26#039;d go to a good dog food store one that sells high end food alot of it is natural. or I%26#039;d try something like fish i believe i read somewhere it%26#039;s good for the coat|||Get a shed rake and use that on him and a good slicker brush. The best brush is Universal with the bent wires. The brush will loosen any flakes on the skin and help get rid of some and the shed blade will remove loose hairs(on short haired dogs) and the dander that is brought up by brushing.

Brush him every day and used the shed blade.

Get a dandruff shampoo(the human kind is fine) and let him sit with the soap on him for 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse and apply a rinse made of apple cider vinegar. 1/4 cup to gallon of water. Do not rinse this off. The apple cider vinegar needs to stay on.

Just brush him more than you have been and use that shed blade, bathe him once every two to three weeks. If the dandruff is really bad you can bathe him once a week until you can see some positive results.|||I give my staffy tin fish with weetbix mix with cooking oil|||oat meal dog shampoo and avon skin so soft|||first you%26#039;d need to be sure that it isn%26#039;t a skin condition

if it isn%26#039;t you could feed him oats and rice (mix it in with the food)

and you could also from time to time mix in a little bit of vegatable oil with the dog food|||These are some possibilities and solutions to your dogs dry coat w dandruff.

1.poor quality food is one reason, but the food ur giving it seems ok.

2.Needs additional protein-

sources are: lean muscle meat (chicken, beef, lamb, turkey) egg, organ meats(liver, kidney) whole milk(casein) and others.

3.needs supplements containing B vitamins, proteins and other helpful nutrients

4.Requires more fat in the diet-

the sources are chicken fat, vegetable oil, and tallow. or some fatty acid suplements.

5.needs kelp and and tyrosine to stimulate thyroide- options are:

supplement w thyrosine. small dogs 150mg, medium dogs 250mg and large dogs 500mg, add seaweed to food daily,

supplement with B vitamins,

supplement w zinc,

supplement with antioxidant-rich %26quot;whole food%26quot; or sinthetic combination of antioxidants.

I really hope this helps and if u need anything about how to check the food quality or any questions of the above or other things you can contact me at kelleyvanessa2000@yahoo.com ill be glad to help!|||my dog had bad dandruff what i used to clear it up was baby oil on his fur it works dreams! make sure u rub it into his/her skin and don%26#039;t use to much to make her/his fur to oily as they produce there own oil also make sure when u are putting the baby oil on to massage the skin because it will help the skin to produce its own oil bath and brush the dog well be4 u use the baby oil

i hope this helped|||Dont give him baths that will dry his skin out more. They make fish oil for dogs. I have a Rott that I give it to because she gets dry skin and it works very well. I dont know if you can buy it at a Pet Smart or anything like that because we get ours from my gf%26#039;s dad who is a breeder/trainer. But try Pet Smart or a online store. All you do is put 2tbs of it in your dogs food once a day, and its really healthy and good for them.|||thaere nothing exsept a bath and lotheshan|||my rotties are the same way...put olive oil or fish oil in their food...not too much cuz then they wont eat it....but it does work|||I%26#039;ve been told that you can put 1 Tablespoon of olive oil in their food every-so-often and it will help keep their skin from being dry. We have just started this with our Lab, his skin on his face is pretty dry and he itches it alot causing sores. We have also found this cream at PetsMart that seems to work really well for his itching...its called Corti-Care. It%26#039;s Hydrocortisone lotion.|||A raw egg in his food every week will work miracles!|||Try 3 TBS of olive oil in his food once a day, and use oatmeal in his bath water. Worked wonders for my dogs.|||My dog use to have dry skin, and the vet told us to put left over grease in his dog food. such as bacon grease and so on.|||Ask your vet about giving the dog some oils in his food. Also, consider allergies as well. He may be reacting to something new in the house. There is a cream called Penatine that I have used on my dags paw when he developed a sore but like I said, run it by your vet first...|||this is a no brainer. Add vegitable oil to your dogs food. 1-2 table spoons per day. Also if you can wash your dog in lake water rather than in public water as it contains floride which is a cancer causing agent and can dry the skin. Also give your dog filtered water to drink|||First, I would make sure it%26#039;s not a skin problem that needs a doctor%26#039;s attention AND that you%26#039;re feeding your dog quality food. Then you can simply add a few tablespoons of Omega Fatty Acid (fish oil) to the dog food. I also scramble a few eggs for my dog on the weekend. The eggs are good for her coat.

Good luck! :)|||Our bulldog has the same problem in the winter. Our vet recommended an omega-3 fatty acid supplement. We bought it at the vet and we squirt it on his food once a day and it%26#039;s actually been working fine, he%26#039;s still a little itchy, but the dandruff is almost gone so we can see it%26#039;s doing it%26#039;s job. Also, we only bathe him once a month, anymore would be way too much! Hope this helps!|||Try a couple of teaspoons of olive oil in his food daily. Also speak to your vet about a good quality dog food that has all the essential nutrients the dog may need. The vet can also recommend a topical ointment or specialized shampoo for your pet%26#039;s problem. Good luck|||First of all, I would venture to say you probably have him on a food like Pedigree that is full of corn. He is allergic to it no doubt. I have 3 pits myself, and they need really high quality food too, or this is a problem for us too. Get him on a food with no corn like Nutro lamb and rice or Canidae. You can also give him a scrambled egg or tablespoon of olive oil a couple times a week until it clears up. THe most improtant thing is the food. The shampoo is like putting lotion on an allergic reation, you have to treat the source. Good luck!|||Have you tried COD LIVER OIL? My mother said she learned it from her father. It smells fishy, but helps. Put a tablespoon full in or on the food. We would let our dogs lick it from the spoon.|||Olive oil or fish oil, and use oatmeal or salicylic acid shampoo once per week, allowing it to soak 10-15 minutes.|||1) High quality dog food without corn fillers.

2) Daily multi-vitamin.

3) Missing Link Plus (has glucosamine which is excellent for joints)

4) Don%26#039;t over bathe.|||Most of the time what causes dandruff in dogs are allergies. I highly recommend an Omega-3 fatty acid for your pup. My boxer has allergies and dry, flaky skin. Fatty acids are what my vet recommended for her.

You can find them at a health food store or you can get them from Doctors Foster and Smith. They have good quality products at a lower price than you would pay at a local pet supply.

Good luck. I hope your pup gets better! :)
